8. Oddfellows’ Hall (1867)
Oddfellows’ Hall
271 Queen Street South
The fraternal society known as the Odd Fellows built this hall to serve as a meeting place and social centre, and it was frequently the site of concerts, dances and banquets. A room upstairs served as the library and reading room of the Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Institute for several years. The River Park Masonic Lodge, lacking a hall of their own, was also allowed to meet here after their organization was founded in 1876. The Odd Fellows sold the hall in 1972, and renovations to the decade have left the once-ornate ground floor exterior quite altered from its original appearance, which had featured a gabled architrave over two elongated windows and the front door. The building is now used for commercial purposes.
