| Streetsville was once aptly described as the “hotbed of Orangeism” in
Peel. By the 1840s, local residents had the choice of two lodges- William Graydon’s
No. 263 and Henry Rutledge’s No. 290. William and John Graydon built this
meeting hall for the staunchly Irish Protestant organization on land donated
by farmer and fellow Orangeman, Henry Rutledge. The two lodges did not amalgamate
until 1916. The two-storey, gable-roofed rectangular building features the poly-
chromatic brickwork seen in many public buildings of the era. It remains in fairly
good condition considering that it has fallen into disuse. Its imposing appearance,
with heavy cornice and decorative brickwork, is evidence of the importance that
was once placed on the organization within the community. |
