25. Cuthbert House (1835)
Cuthbert House
25 Main Street
This building is named after Richard Cuthbert, a Catholic yeoman who ran a shoemaking business here after purchasing the property in 1844. Prior to Cuthbert’s ownership the land had belonged to blacksmith Josiah Bennett in 1830, who sold it in 1832 to gunsmith Richard Harris for a high price, indicating that the building may already have been standing at that time. The Ballinger Brothers, John and George, bought the property from Harris and, during their 10-year period of ownership, operated an inn. Although now a private residence, the building was located on the busy road leading to Street’s mill, which was an ideal location for a commercial enterprise. The original clapboard exterior of the house remains intact under its present siding.
