22. The Cenotaph (1926)
Cenotaph
Main Street and Queen Street
In 1925, the Streetsville Overseas Veterans Association was organized under the leadership of Major Rev. Frank Vipond, a local resident who had served as a chaplain during the First World War. The group immediately began to plan the construction of a memorial to honor these local residents who did not return from the war. Unveiled on Dominion Day, 1926, the memorial stands 18 feet high and is constructed of locally made red brick and Credit Valley stone. The cenotaph now serves as a memorial to fallen soldiers from subsequent conflicts as well as those from the First World War. The site, at the intersection of two of the village’s busiest streets, was once the location of an old band shell where concerts and fairs were held. In 1993, the City of Mississauga, and the local community restored the cenotaph. It was dedicated on July 1, 1994.
