| Despite its distinctive tavern-like appearance, Franklin House was originally built as a private residence for Peter Douglas. The building gets its name from its second owner, Bennett Franklin, who was a partner in Barber’s Woollen Mills and a lumber dealer. After Franklin’s death, the building was acquired by John Lennon who retained the name of the previous owner when he opened his “Franklin House” hotel in a long line of owners to operate an inn here even though the establishment was forced to shut down when the Canada Temperance Act was passed in Peel County in 1914. The building narrowly escaped demolition in 1979 and today enjoys continued use as a commercial establishment. The balcony/porch was added during renovations in 1989. |
